Child Friendly Kitchens...................1

Dirty, Dusty, or Incomplete: How Glazes Will Become Dated? ....................2

Monthly Specials .........3

So many kitchens today with growing families encounter the challenge of designing with the needs and abilities of multiple generations in mind. This most certainly includes children.

Here are a few suggestions that may make life in the kitchen...a little more “friendly”:

1. Built-in fold-up step stools on back of base cabinet doors just below or adjascent to most used areas, ie. sink, microwave, dish cabinet, etc.

2. Slip resistent flooring because smaller children don’t

usually use caution about running in the kitchen.

3. Lower microwave; the kids are going to use it anyway, make it safer and easier to use.

4. Snack fridge closer to the living area, so the children don’t have to interrupt other kitchen activities for fruit, drinks and the like.

5. Lowered baking counter not only makes baking preparation for shorter adults more convenient, but the children can join in here also. I usually recommend about 30” high countertop.

This list can be added to as technology and new design affects how we... and kids use our kitchens.

“…we are very happy with the design and results. He came up with several good suggestions that we are only too happy we used!”

Q: Which flooring product should I install after the cabinetry?

A: The only product that I recommend to install ,after the cabinetry is in place, is floating wood floors. In order for the wood to expand and contract properly, it must be installed after and around all fixed items in the room, such as cabinetry.

I highly recommend, wherever possible to install tile, glue-down or nail-down wood flooring, cork, bamboo, vinyl, luxury vinyl tile, and all others to be installed previous to the installation of the cabinetry. This helps in many ways, but the two most prevalent include minimizing difficulties with changing cabinetry kitchen layout down the road, if the flooring remains. Also, if there is a leak from the refrigerator or dishwasher, it will become noticed much quicker if the flooring under the cabinets is the same level as the rest of the flooring.
