So many kitchens today with growing families encounter the challenge of designing with the needs and abilities of multiple generations in mind. This most certainly includes children. Here are a few suggestions that may make life in the kitchen...a little more “friendly”: 1. Built-in fold-up step stools on back of base cabinet doors just below or adjascent to most used areas, ie. sink, microwave, dish cabinet, etc. 2. Slip resistent flooring because smaller children don’t |
usually use caution about running in the kitchen. 3. Lower microwave; the kids are going to use it anyway, make it safer and easier to use. 4. Snack fridge closer to the living area, so the children don’t have to interrupt other kitchen activities for fruit, drinks and the like. 5. Lowered baking counter not only makes baking preparation for shorter adults more convenient, but the children can join in here also. I usually recommend about 30” high countertop. This list can be added to as technology and new design affects how we... and kids use our kitchens. |
