"What about bacteria?". "Can you cut on it?". "How do you clean it?". "How does it compare to granite?". "How long does it last?". "Can it get wet?". "Who manufactures it?". "Doesn't it damage easily?" And the questions go on and on. What is it about our culture, that good products and good designs have to skip generations?

Though I will not be taking the time to answer all the questions that come to us about butcher block, we will simplify the thinking errors, so that this generation can accept and

move on.

First of all, remember that butcher block is real solid wood. It use to be a tree, out in the sunlight, rain, and weather conditions. It was a living breathing organism. It has built-in antibacterial armies, called "enzymes".

Wood has always been a great use for shelving, table tops, coutnertops, dressers, and much more. Go to your local grocery store, and look into the bakery to see a very large butcher block working table. In my opinion, it is one of the best countertops.

LAST MONTH’S

Question: Which ventilation type of blower is best for high performance, and low noise inside and outside? Answer: A: Inline blower.

Q: Without removing our solid surface countertops, what options do we have for changing the color and pattern?

Limited Budget, St George UT

A: Dear Limited Budget, first of all, you are one of a great population of people having to do things differently than they would have just 3-5 years ago. Anyway, remember that veneers, coatings, and topical finishes always need maintenance, care, and replacement sometime down the road. However, some countertop products can be placed right on top of the existing countertops, witch some changes to sinks, outlets, backsplashes, etc. Other alternatives would include epoxy coatings with a 15-25 year life expectancy. Some aftermarket spray on coatings I would stay away from. Not a very long life expectancy. Whatever you choose, there is nothing like doing it right the first time.

Universal planning for all homes is almost necessary for today’s changing family dynamics. If you have three bathrooms in your home, you may want to upgrade one to a universal design, so that almost anyone in any situation may be able to use it. A walk-in tub is a great way to get that bathroom started.
